Policy updates

Last week President Obama signed into law a $787 billion U.S. stimulus package that contains "Buy American" provisions for certain procurement projects. These "Buy American" provisions were recently amended so that they do not violate U.S. international trade obligations. This was positive news and we'd like to thank our members for working with their U.S. counterparts to advocate against these provisions.

Chief EI Actuary Recommends Holding 2009 EI Premiums at 2008 Levels

On October 14, the Chief Actuary’s Report to the Employment Insurance Commission recommended that 2009 EI premium rates remain unchanged at $1.73/$100 for employees and $2.42/$100 for employers. The recommendation was based upon the assumption that the average unemployment rate for 2009 will be 6.5 percent, as opposed to 6.2 percent in 2008.
